Book Excerpts

The excitement in my parent’s house could be felt after we arrived because everyone was looking at the pictures of the twins.  Our twin sons were going to be the first grandchildren in both our families.

While getting ready for my Grandmother’s family picture my mom and I were talking.  She was putting her makeup on in the mirror and I had to pee as pregnant women seem to do every other minute.  In the middle of one of my sentences, I looked down while wiping and saw blood.  I said, “Mom”, with a sense of absolute fear in my voice.

“I’ll get Sean,” my mom said, as her eyes widened at the site of the blood.

I felt so scared; however, I sat there waiting for Sean to come up and I tried to talk myself out of being scared.  I sat there thinking of how we just saw them on the ultrasound and everything looked great.  They were acting like themselves, so I thought this must be some freak thing that I was bleeding.  Now because I was bleeding, they were going to tell me that I have to be on bed rest, and that will drive me absolutely crazy!

Sean came into the bathroom and asked, “What’s up babe?”  I stuck out my hand and showed him the toilet paper that I had been staring at in an attempt to talk myself out of being scared.  I told him as if he could not see, “I’m bleeding.”

I saw a fear in his face that I will never forget, because he stood there frozen.  His heart sank to the bottom of his stomach and he thought, ‘OH SHIT!  Just try and stay calm for Jodi.’  Typically we balance each other extremely well; however, I could tell at this moment that Sean was just as scared as I was.  I also came to the realization that no matter how long I tried to talk myself out of it, I was truly afraid.

Sean said, “We need to go to the hospital.”
